Barlow Beef @ Wike Brothers' Farm. Wike
Brothers' Farm is located in Sharon in scenic northwestern Connecticut.
Hank and Donna Hoskins Barlow offer premium grass fed all natural beef and
pasture raised eggs. Pork products from our Tamowrth,
Glouster Old Spot Cross pigs will be available in the winter of 2007.
Our Hereford and Piedmontese cows are bred to our
own Piedmontese bull. Calves are born on the farm and raised to 24 months,
eating nothing but grass and minerals and drinking mountain spring water.
We make our own hay for winter feeding. No antibiotics, hormones or commercial
feeds are used. Beef is hung for 2-3 weeks to dry age.
Piedmontese cattle are "double-muscled" and
mature fast, producing extremely lean meat with very high tenderness
ratings. A 3.5 oz serving of full blood Piedmontese contains 36 mg of
cholesterol, 95 calories and 21.2 g of protein, where the same size serving
of traditional beef will have 68 mg cholesterol, 245 calories and 18.5
g of protein.
By the piece prices range from $5.50/pound for the
standard crossbreed ground beef, to $22/pound for tenderloin. Full blood
Piedmontese—which will be available in 2008—will be somewhat
higher in cost.
The farm is open, and animals available for viewing
by appointment. Contact us to order or for more information.

Cedar Meadow Farm is a small family-run
farm located in the Town of Ledyard, in southeastern Connecticut. We
specialize in the production of grass fed chickens, turkeys,
and pork.
Our philosophy is simple: We believe your food should
not contain antibiotics and growth hormones, or be shipped hundreds of
miles across the country and handled by countless individuals. We oppose “high-throughput
factory farming” and are doing our part to provide a fresh and
healthy product to our patrons.
Unlike commercial farms, our turkeys and broilers
spend most of their lives out on pasture. This is not a new idea to animal
husbandry. In fact, it is a step back in time to the way our forefathers
cared for their land and livestock.
Today’s commercial farms rely on breeds that
aren’t always well suited to an open environment such as ours.
At Cedar Meadow, we believe it is our responsibility to ensure the future
of those breeds that were once familiar and commonplace across the New
England landscape. We’ve dedicated much of our resources towards
maintaining heritage breeds. Because of their genetic profile, heritage
breed animals tend to grow at a much slower rate then their commercial
cousins. This requires a greater investment in both time and money, but
we think you will agree it is well worth it!
Please visit our website to learn more about us or
drop us an e-mail. We look forward to hearing from you!

Devon Point Farm raises heritage “ruby
red” American Milking Devon cattle for breedstock and gourmet
grassfed beef using rotational grazing and organic and sustainable
farming practices. Calves are born on the farm and raised to 24 months
only on grass, hay and trace minerals. We use no antibiotics and no
growth hormones. Our steers are finished on grass or hay only – no
grain.
Devon cattle have the natural genetics for superior performance on
grass alone. What this means for you is fine-flavored, tender grassfed
beef that is not only healthy for you, but has better taste and texture
than grassfed beef from other commercially modified breeds that may
not be as well suited to the pasture-only diet that nature intended.
Devon grassfed beef is higher in Omega 3 essential fatty acids, lower
in cholesterol, and higher in cancer-fighting conjugated linoleic acid
(CLA) than mass-produced grain-fed beef.
Devon Point Farm’s grassfed beef is for sale by the half (one
side) or whole steer. The beef is pre-sold with a 50% deposit at special
bulk pricing of $5/pound hanging weight and is custom cut to customer
specifications. We also offer special introductory samplers of “boxed
beef” – a mix of steaks, roasts and ground beef in a 40-pound
box for $300 (available on a limited basis). Individual cuts range
from $12/pound for sirloin to $24/pound for tenderloin.
All of our beef is slaughtered and butchered locally under USDA supervision,
dry-aged for a minimum of two weeks, vacuum cryovac wrapped, labeled
with the cut and weight, and frozen.
New for 2010! Devon Point Farm is offering organically
grown vegetable, herb and flower CSA shares for weekly
pickup at our farm.

Footsteps Farm in Stonington,
Ct is a small family based farm.
Of the 4,200 farms in the State of Connecticut, FootstepsFarm
is the FIRST and ONLY farm to receive the prestigious
“Certified Humane” Certification for their Turkeys, Layer
Chickens and Broiler Chickens.

Of the 2,100,900 farms in the United States, Footsteps
Farm is one of 55 farms so honored with the Certification.
The Certified Humane Raised & Handled Label

in mind. Food products that carry the label are certified to have come
from facilities that meet precise, objective standards for farm animal
treatment.
We raise heirloom breeds to help save endangered
species such as Tamworth hogs, Scottish Highlanders, Delaware Chickens,
Bourbon Red, Narragansett, Royal Palm and Blue Slate Turkeys, all are
pastured, and are rotationally grazed. In 2007 we will introduce pastured
duck.
Our birds are processed by us by hand to insure no
fecal soup and the highest of standards. A small farm air chill system
is currently under construction to eliminate any water baths and insure
the freshest and cleanest of products.

Laurel Ridge Farm sells Laurel
Ridge Grass Fed Beef which is produced from its own
herd of Angus and Angus/Devon cows. Our beef is grown on
the pastures of our 700 acre farm in Litchfield, CT.
Our cows are fed only fresh grass or hay and kelp
(for the trace minerals a cow needs). We use no antibiotics or growth
hormones, and our cows are finished on grass or hay only. We produce
our own hay from our land to feed our cows when the pastures are resting.
Our beef is slaughtered and butchered locally under
USDA supervision, and dry-aged for a minimum of 2 weeks. Unlike what
you will likely find at the local grocery store, our meat has a grand
total of 45 ‘food miles’ on it—the distance from our
farm to the slaughter facility, then back to our farm.
We sell a variety of cuts depending upon the time
of year. We retail the beef from our farm stand, which is located in
the Windmill at 66
Wigwam in Litchfield. Hours vary during the year; please check
our website for the hours during
the time you’d like to stop by. We are open by appointment during
the winter months.
We also sell our beef through several local retailers,
including Amazing Grains in Litchfield, CT, and New
Morning Natural and Organic in Woodbury, CT. We are
at the Litchfield Farmer’s Market which is open on Saturdays from
10-1. (Please check www.litchfieldhillsfood.org for
actual hours.)

Savage Hill Cattle Co. at Matson
Farm is located in the geographic heart of Connecticut. We
sell free range grass-and-hay-fed beef by the side.
We utilize Black Angus cattle crossbred with Wagyu
cattle (Wagyu cattle produce the meat more commonly known as Kobe beef).
This allows us to take advantage of the superior hybrid vigor traits
or heterosis of a crossbred animal which makes them more hearty, healthy
and naturally productive. As a result, all of our animals are kept outdoors
in a low stress environment year round, sometimes with the exception
of a young calf and mother in very inclement weather. Producing quality
grass-fed beef is no easy task; we have found the introduction of Wagyu
genetics into our operation has made an enormous impact on the flavor
and tenderness of our beef. We are now able to produce an even better grass-fed
product without compromising the quality you would expect from a great
steak!
We are a small operation that values old fashion
farming techniques and humane treatment of all our animals. We DO NOT
use any synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides anywhere on our
property, in turn this allows a diverse group of soil microbes to improve
nutrient cycling and deliver more trace minerals through the food chain
and eventually to you. We pledge that we will never use artificial growth
hormones, antibiotics or other drugs in our cattle.
All of the beef that we sell from our farm comes
from cattle that have been born and raised on our farm in accordance
with our strict husbandry practices. This eliminates the possibility
of introducing animals that can be sick, diseased or not raised to our
standards.
Currently our beef can only be purchased
by the whole side. A typical side of beef weighs approximately 300 lbs.
There is an approximate 10 day to 2 week lead time required and a 50%
deposit as animals are processed on a per order basis for maximum quality.
All of our meat is processed in USDA inspected facilities.
The current price of a side is $5.00 per lb. hanging weight for a half
and $4.50 per lb. for a whole cow; this includes custom cutting to customer
specifications (if desired) and vacuum sealing, however prices are subject
to change as prices fluctuate.
Give us a call or send an e-mail today to place your
order, we will give you a call as soon as it is ready and you can pick
it up directly from the processor. When you buy from us you get
the best piece of beef and peace of mind.

Woodbridge Farm, located in rural
southeastern Connecticut, is committed to pursuing sustainable
agriculture, loving the land, plants, and animals, and learning
from the wisdom of nature.
Our cattle are rare and beautiful red Milking Devons,
with horns. It is renowned for its rich creamy milk, fine beef, and willingness
as a draft animal. The most popular colonial breed because of its triple
purpose usefulness, it is now endangered. It is renowned for its rich
creamy milk, its fine beef, and its willingness as a draft animal.
The farm produces beef and a creamery selling yogurt,
and a variety of cheeses. Unlike today’s high performance
specialized breeds, Milking Devons do extremely well on a simple diet
of rich pastures and good hay, composed of a high diversity of grasses,
clovers, and herbs. No grain is fed to our cattle. They only receive
natural kelp, salt, and small amounts of minerals added to their lush
salad grass, derived from enriched soil, pasture rotation, and regular
composting methods.
Woodbridge Farm also raises heritage poultry and pigs.
They are fed only organic grain, supplemented by open pasture rotation
for the birds, and woodland runs for the pigs. We raise fine heritage
breeds of turkeys and chickens that follow the cattle in
the pasture rotation pens when they reach the pullet stage. The fowl
prepare the pasture for a new cycle of growth with their scratching and
stimulation of the ground and plants, reducing the need for mowing and
harrowing with a tractor.
