100-Percent Grass-Fed
Dairies
Milk from 100-percent grass-fed animals is much
healthier than ordinary milk. It has a higher concentration of vitamins
and antioxidants, fewer “bad” fats, and more “healthy” fats
such as omega-3 fatty acids and CLA (conjugated linoleic acid).
The following dairies raise their animals on forage
alone. Typically, the forage includes grass and a legume such as clover
or alfalfa. The animals are given hay or grass silage when there is not
enough high-quality pasture.
There are very few grass-only dairies in the United
States. Cows that eat greens alone produce less milk, and their production
can go way down in the winter, making it hard for the farmers to make
a profit. For this reason, many of the dairy farmers listed on eatwild.com
graze their animals but supplement them with small amounts of grain.
(The type of supplement given and the amount will be in their listing.)
The more grass in the animals’ diet, the healthier the milk.
All of the dairy farmers listed on Eatwild produce
delicious, superior milk that is free of antibiotics and added hormones.
We have made a separate list of these 100-percent grass-fed dairies because
they are very rare, and because of the premium products they sell. You
can expect to pay more for these products because the farmers are sacrificing
volume for quality.

Milk by Jo Robinson, and look for news postings about milk in the Benefits
for Your Health section. Visit Scientific

COLORADO
James Ranch. Three generations of James’s
and their families welcome the accelerated interest in their grassed-based,
organically, locally produced meats, cheese, vegetables & flowers,
eggs, and trees. All our products are sustainably grown on
the ranch we have stewarded for forty-eight years in the Animas Valley,
10 miles north of Durango, Colorado.
We currently sell 100% grass-fed and finished beef,
from Red Angus cows—by the side or by the steak—never away
from our supervision until on your grill. Our artisan cheeses are
made of raw milk from our Jersey cows raised and milked right on the
ranch. We’ve been making these distinctive cheeses over eight years;
they stand alone among Colorado homestead cheeses. Our pastured chickens
produce brown & green eggs sought after by our local customers
for their outstanding taste. We devote six acres to growing vegetables,
flowers, and fruits that defy the imagination and short growing
season of our high mountain valley. We don’t expect our customers
to eat our spruce trees, but recommend these mature, naturally grown,
native trees for your landscape needs.
Both our beef herd and dairy herd are completely
grass based. All of our animals are raised without the use of chemical
fertilizers, pesticides, hormones or antibiotics. We strongly believe
in farming and ranching sustainably and improving the land whenever possible.
We love to have our customers see what we do and learn of our holistic
practices that support the healthy land, crops, animals, and families.
During the summer from June thru October we have guided tours two days
per week, using an electric cart for ease of transport and enjoyment.
Our products are available at our own Ranch Market
(Open M-F, 11:00-6:00, May-Oct. and open Saturdays 1-4:30, during the

IDAHO
Heritage Farms is located in the beautiful
Cocolalla Valley in the Idaho Panhandle. Our animals have a symbiotic
relationship with the pastures on which they graze, each feeding the
other without chemical inputs to either.
While most chickens are raised in 100% confinement,
we've found that Pasturing our birds adds quality while making farming
simpler and environmentally friendly. On our pastures, there's an entire
ecosystem geared towards absorbing manure, eliminating pollution. The
addition of fresh green plants to the chickens' diet adds quite a bit
of flavor to the meat and eggs, while the lack of crowding makes health
problems uncommon. Eggs from Pastured Poultry not only taste better
and have darker yolks, but they are certainly higher in vitamins and
have a superior Omega-3/Omega-6 balance to ordinary eggs. Likewise,
the meat from Pastured Poultry tastes better, while being lower in
fat and more nutritious, as well.
Our Grazing Program ensures that our cattle are
always grazing on lush green fresh grass, while at the same time replacing
the broad spectrum nutrients they are removing. Every few days the
cattle are moved to fresh pasture, and replaced by chickens, which
then scatter the beef fertilizer while adding their own variety and
controlling fly and bug populations. The chickens also convert the
grass to luscious natural meat and eggs for your dining pleasure.
Raw milk is offered to the surrounding community
through our Herdshare Program. Our dairy cows, likewise, are never
fed any grain, and are free to roam the pasture day and night. In
the winter they are fed our own organically grown hay, supplemented
with a little ground dried peas and minerals.
We offer Free-Range Eggs and the Herd Share
Program year round as well as high quality Grass Finished Beef and
Broiler/Fryer Chickens in season. Beef is sold by the whole,
half, or quarter, or frozen by the package. Orders for beef and chicken
must be placed well in advance, as we sell out early each year. Call
for availability.

PENNSYLVANIA
Coulter Farms lies quietly nestled
between Shade Mountain and Tuscarora Mountain in Juniata
County, midway between Harrisburg and State College. We are
proud producers of exceptional grass fed beef,
lamb, pork, free-range eggs, raw milk cheeses from our own Certified Organic 100% Grassfed Jersey cows (up to 9 varieties), and honey.
Our family manages the rotational grazing of 120
acres of rolling multi-speciated pasture and 90 acres of productive hay
fields (organic as of Fall, 2007). We practice a purely organic farming
system, relying exclusively on biological systems to achieve excellence
in our soils/pastures/harvested forage/animals. Rotational grazing, cover
crops, composting of manure, no-tillage seeding and conservative crop
rotations are used extensively. Only the cleanest water runs off our
land. We have eliminated all chemical, synthetic, antibiotic inputs and
strive to reduce fossil fuel use while making the best possible use of
solar fuel.
Ruminant animals at Coulter Farms never taste any
form of grain...only mother's milk, lush pasture and fermented hay. Our
two-year-old steers (8-month-old lambs) are fully finished, giving ample
marbling to the meat. This marbling produces the highest levels of CLA
and Omega 3's (not to mention taste and tenderness) in the meat. Wintering
beef over a second winter to an age of 24-26 months is time-consuming,
but we feel you'll agree that it is well worth the wait.
Processing is handled humanely in a local, USDA certified
abattoir. Two to three weeks aging results in the highest levels of taste
and tenderness. The product is skillfully cut, flash-frozen and cryo-vac
packed to maximize quality and longevity.
A walk-in freezer at our farm allows us to maintain
some inventory of meat, but most animals are pre-ordered (you may come
select your animal on the hoof' if you like). Beef is available in quarters
(approximately 100 pounds), halves or whole animals.
We would appreciate the opportunity to provide your
family with what is, we are confident, the best meat available in the
grass-fed market. Call or email us for more information. If you come
to see us, please remember to bring your kids and boots so we can show
you around.

We have been blessed to have it grow to a fulltime endeavor that has allowed us to meet hundreds of great people. Please feel free to reach out with questions. We would love to meet you.
Please note, our products are not approved or inspected by any government agency, but we are confident in the integrity of the products we raise, sell, and consume (yes, everything we sell is vetted by our family). We want you to know we are not a government-sanctioned source. Buyer Beware!

- 100% Grass Fed dairy operation offering Raw Milk shares and Cheese from 100% A2/A2 Jersey herd. Our dairy is one of very few in the country that keeps their cows on chemical-free pasture 365 days a year with no grain supplements.
- 100% Grass Fed and Finished Beef and Lamb that is not given antibiotics, hormones, chemically treated hay, or chemically treated pasture
- Pasture/Forest Raised non-GMO Pork – we supplement with non-GMO feed and never give any antibiotics or hormones.
- Pasture Raised Chicken, Turkey, and Eggs – Our birds are constantly on grass, and we supplement them with non-GMO feed and never give any antibiotics or hormones. Birds are processed on farm in chemical-free water.
- The feed we supplement our pigs and poultry with is tested beyond the organic requirements for GMOs, herbicides, and pesticides.
- Raw Honey: Hives are never treated, not even with organic fumigants or chemicals.
- Beyond Organic Produce: No pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides.
- Also offer a variety of Salves and Balms made by our family and a long list of baked goods using many Non-GMO and Organic grains and ingredients.
Besides 'on farm pickups,' we’re also at the following weekly farmers’ markets: Falls Church (Saturdays, year around), Del Ray (Saturdays, year around), Leesburg (Saturdays, year around), Burke (Saturdays, April–Dec), Reston (Saturdays, April–Dec), Stone Ridge (Saturdays, April–Oct), and Mt. LoveTree Farmstead Cheese produces of some
of the world's finest and most unique sheep cheese and dry-aged "European" style
grass-fed organic lamb.
LoveTree is organically farmed with 130 acres devoted
to grazing lands and 70 acres to wildlife habitat. This not only makes
for a healthy environment, ecologically speaking, but it also offers
us some unique opportunities for flavor enhancement of our cave-aged
cheeses and our lamb. Our goal is to bring you the flavor of the northwoods
through our raw milk cave-aged sheep cheese and our succulent grass and
milk-fed lambs.
We milk the sheep seasonally (April–September)
while the grass is green. We only make the raw milk cheeses from the
grass-fed milk. Our market lambs are weaned from their mothers at approximately
45 days and are then reared on whey from the cheeseroom, grass, and sometimes
a minimal amount of corn if we have late pastures or an early winter
(no more than 1/2 pound of corn a day per lamb when or if it is necessary
to feed corn).
What We Grow: Raw milk cave-aged sheep cheeses
and raw milk cave-aged jersey cow milk cheeses (when milk is available);
European style lamb (live weight between 75–90 pounds) June–December;
Hot House lambs (live weight 40–55 pounds) April–May; replacement
stock for sheep dairies; and livestock guardian dogs.
Where We Sell Our Products: St. Paul (MN) Farmers
Market, every Saturday April–December, 7 AM–1 PM. Winter
Market sale days are every other weekend, January–March, 9 AM–12
PM, corner of 5th & Wall Streets, St. Paul. We also have on farm
sales by appointment only at this time. Web/mail order items include
raw milk cave-aged cheese.
