100-Percent Grass-Fed DairiesMilk from 100-percent grass-fed animals is much healthier than ordinary milk. It has a higher concentration of vitamins and antioxidants, fewer “bad” fats, and more “healthy” fats such as omega-3 fatty acids and CLA (conjugated linoleic acid). The following dairies raise their animals on forage alone. Typically, the forage includes grass and a legume such as clover or alfalfa. The animals are given hay or grass silage when there is not enough high-quality pasture. There are very few grass-only dairies in the United States. Cows that eat greens alone produce less milk, and their production can go way down in the winter, making it hard for the farmers to make a profit. For this reason, many of the dairy farmers listed on eatwild.com graze their animals but supplement them with small amounts of grain. (The type of supplement given and the amount will be in their listing.) The more grass in the animals’ diet, the healthier the milk. All of the dairy farmers listed on Eatwild produce delicious, superior milk that is free of antibiotics and added hormones. We have made a separate list of these 100-percent grass-fed dairies because they are very rare, and because of the premium products they sell. You can expect to pay more for these products because the farmers are sacrificing volume for quality. For more information about the nutritional benefits, read the essay Super Healthy Milk by Jo Robinson, and look for news postings about milk in the Benefits for Your Health section. Visit Scientific References for a list of specific studies. CONNECTICUT Our cattle are rare and beautiful red Milking Devons, with horns. It is renowned for its rich creamy milk, fine beef, and willingness as a draft animal. The most popular colonial breed because of its triple purpose usefulness, it is now endangered. It is renowned for its rich creamy milk, its fine beef, and its willingness as a draft animal. The farm produces beef and a creamery selling yogurt, and a variety of cheeses. Unlike today’s high performance specialized breeds, Milking Devons do extremely well on a simple diet of rich pastures and good hay, composed of a high diversity of grasses, clovers, and herbs. No grain is fed to our cattle. They only receive natural kelp, salt, and small amounts of minerals added to their lush salad grass, derived from enriched soil, pasture rotation, and regular composting methods. Woodbridge Farm also raises heritage poultry and pigs. They are fed only organic grain, supplemented by open pasture rotation for the birds, and woodland runs for the pigs. We raise fine heritage breeds of turkeys and chickens that follow the cattle in the pasture rotation pens when they reach the pullet stage. The fowl prepare the pasture for a new cycle of growth with their scratching and stimulation of the ground and plants, reducing the need for mowing and harrowing with a tractor. WASHINGTON Sea Breeze Farm is a diverse, multi-species, “beyond organic,” grass-based animal farm, located on the beautiful Isle of Vashon in Washington’s picturesque Puget Sound. We do not apply commercial fertilizers of any kind to our pastures, relying instead on a grazing technique modeled after the migratory habits of wild cattle and bird populations. This labor-intensive, rotational system allows our freely-ranging poultry flocks to symbiotically forage, fertilize and cleanse the pastures behind our dairy herd. The resulting meat, dairy and eggs produced on our farm are of infinitely superior quality, both flavor- and health-wise than those produced conventionally, and in our opinion are significantly superior to typical “Organic” animal products. We also take pride in the sustainability and resource-wise management of our farm systems. We sell our products only through local channels. Our meat, dairy, eggs, cheese, wines and prepared foods such as ice cream and meat broths are available from our on-site Farmstand, as well as the Vashon Saturday Farmer’s Market. Our pure, whole, unadulterated cow’s milk is also available at the Pike Place Market Creamery in Seattle. Please check this listing frequently as our products will soon be available through additional retailers in both Seattle and Vashon Island. For directions to the farm, please see our website. WI 53530. (800) 338-3773. E-mail: brunchee@mhtc.net LoveTree Farmstead Cheese produces of some of the world's finest and most unique sheep cheese and dry-aged "European" style grass-fed organic lamb. LoveTree is organically farmed with 130 acres devoted to grazing lands and 70 acres to wildlife habitat. This not only makes for a healthy environment, ecologically speaking, but it also offers us some unique opportunities for flavor enhancement of our cave-aged cheeses and our lamb. Our goal is to bring you the flavor of the northwoods through our raw milk cave-aged sheep cheese and our succulent grass and milk-fed lambs. We milk the sheep seasonally (April–September) while the grass is green. We only make the raw milk cheeses from the grass-fed milk. Our market lambs are weaned from their mothers at approximately 45 days and are then reared on whey from the cheeseroom, grass, and sometimes a minimal amount of corn if we have late pastures or an early winter (no more than 1/2 pound of corn a day per lamb when or if it is necessary to feed corn). What We Grow: Raw milk cave-aged sheep cheeses and raw milk cave-aged jersey cow milk cheeses (when milk is available); European style lamb (live weight between 75–90 pounds) June–December; Hot House lambs (live weight 40–55 pounds) April–May; replacement stock for sheep dairies; and livestock guardian dogs.
