100-Percent Grass-Fed Dairies

Milk from 100-percent grass-fed animals is much healthier than ordinary milk. It has a higher concentration of vitamins and antioxidants, fewer “bad” fats, and more “healthy” fats such as omega-3 fatty acids and CLA (conjugated linoleic acid).

The following dairies raise their animals on forage alone. Typically, the forage includes grass and a legume such as clover or alfalfa. The animals are given hay or grass silage when there is not enough high-quality pasture.

There are very few grass-only dairies in the United States. Cows that eat greens alone produce less milk, and their production can go way down in the winter, making it hard for the farmers to make a profit. For this reason, many of the dairy farmers listed on eatwild.com graze their animals but supplement them with small amounts of grain. (The type of supplement given and the amount will be in their listing.) The more grass in the animals’ diet, the healthier the milk.

All of the dairy farmers listed on Eatwild produce delicious, superior milk that is free of antibiotics and added hormones. We have made a separate list of these 100-percent grass-fed dairies because they are very rare, and because of the premium products they sell. You can expect to pay more for these products because the farmers are sacrificing volume for quality.

For more information about the nutritional benefits, read the essay Super Healthy Milk by Jo Robinson, and look for news postings about milk in the Benefits for Your Health section. Visit Scientific References for a list of specific studies.

COLORADO

James Ranch. Three generations of James’s and their families welcome the accelerated interest in their grassed-based, organically, locally produced meats, cheese, vegetables & flowers, eggs, and trees. All our products are sustainably grown on the ranch we have stewarded for forty-eight years in the Animas Valley, 10 miles north of Durango, Colorado.

We currently sell 100% grass-fed and finished beef, from Red Angus cows—by the side or by the steak—never away from our supervision until on your grill. Our artisan cheeses are made of raw milk from our Jersey cows raised and milked right on the ranch. We’ve been making these distinctive cheeses over eight years; they stand alone among Colorado homestead cheeses. Our pastured chickens produce brown & green eggs sought after by our local customers for their outstanding taste. We devote six acres to growing vegetables, flowers, and fruits that defy the imagination and short growing season of our high mountain valley. We don’t expect our customers to eat our spruce trees, but recommend these mature, naturally grown, native trees for your landscape needs.

Both our beef herd and dairy herd are completely grass based. All of our animals are raised without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, hormones or antibiotics. We strongly believe in farming and ranching sustainably and improving the land whenever possible. We love to have our customers see what we do and learn of our holistic practices that support the healthy land, crops, animals, and families. During the summer from June thru October we have guided tours two days per week, using an electric cart for ease of transport and enjoyment.

Our products are available at our own Ranch Market (Open M-F, 11:00-6:00, May-Oct. and open Saturdays 1-4:30, during the winter). We also make our products available at the Durango and Telluride Farmer’s Markets, regional natural food stores and singular restaurants in the area. Visit our website for more specifics about each product. Contact us about shipping possibilities.

FLORIDA

Alday Farm is a husband and wife venture in SW Hardee County and headquarters for Alday Hay, FineFittedFilly (a custom leather shop), and Jersey Girls Dairy Farm (a 100% grassfed raw milk program).

The farm promotes non-certified organic methods of raising their small herd of Jersey cows. All cow pastures are organically fertilized, often with skim milk and whey byproduct from butter and cheese production.

No hormones, antibiotics, steroids or GMOs are used.

All cattle are pastured at least 23 hours a day on a grass selected for improved nutritive value. The milker cows receive alfalfa hay while being milked and when returned to the pasture they rest in the shade under the live oaks.

Jersey Girls raw milk products are guaranteed to be "Udderly Jerseylicious" and their slogan,"Our 100% grass fed cows give you 100% "REAL" all natural "LIVE" raw milk" says the rest.

Special order products are Sweet Cream Butter, Cultured Butter, Clarified Butter, Compound Butters, assorted Cheeses, Cream, Sour Cream, and Yogurt. A 2–3 day notice is generally sufficient for these items.

Free-range chicken eggs are usually available and often there are home canned vegetables, jams, jellies as well as an array of leather items from gun holsters to western style diaper bags for sale.

If you are lucky and happen to be picking up your order on the weekend you may get to enjoy some of their delicious homemade ice cream.

On occasion calves are available for sale and there is a program "Birth to Harvest" where they are raised to your specifications and then delivered to the local processing shop.

This farm may be a little out of the way, but the scenery is beautiful and the prices are near wholesale making the trip well worth the drive.

IDAHO

Heritage Farms is located in the beautiful Cocolalla Valley in the Idaho Panhandle. Our animals have a symbiotic relationship with the pastures on which they graze, each feeding the other without chemical inputs to either.

While most chickens are raised in 100% confinement, we've found that Pasturing our birds adds quality while making farming simpler and environmentally friendly. On our pastures, there's an entire ecosystem geared towards absorbing manure, eliminating pollution. The addition of fresh green plants to the chickens' diet adds quite a bit of flavor to the meat and eggs, while the lack of crowding makes health problems uncommon. Eggs from Pastured Poultry not only taste better and have darker yolks, but they are certainly higher in vitamins and have a superior Omega-3/Omega-6 balance to ordinary eggs. Likewise, the meat from Pastured Poultry tastes better, while being lower in fat and more nutritious, as well.

Our Grazing Program ensures that our cattle are always grazing on lush green fresh grass, while at the same time replacing the broad spectrum nutrients they are removing. Every few days the cattle are moved to fresh pasture, and replaced by chickens, which then scatter the beef fertilizer while adding their own variety and controlling fly and bug populations. The chickens also convert the grass to luscious natural meat and eggs for your dining pleasure.

Raw milk is offered to the surrounding community through our Herdshare Program. Our dairy cows, likewise, are never fed any grain, and are free to roam the pasture day and night. In the winter they are fed our own organically grown hay, supplemented with a little ground dried peas and minerals.

We offer Free-Range Eggs and the Herd Share Program year round as well as high quality Grass Finished Beef and Broiler/Fryer Chickens in season. Beef is sold by the whole, half, or quarter, or frozen by the package. Orders for beef and chicken must be placed well in advance, as we sell out early each year. Call for availability.

Here on the Steiner Family Farm our family delights in producing healthy, nourishing and sustaining food. We are an organic farm resisting the use of chemicals and GMO seed. Instead we are seeking biological ways of improving our soils, which in turn will boost the nutrition of the milk, meat, and eggs we produce. We do not use any antibiotics, hormones, or growth stimulants.

Our desire is to work with nature instead of against it. All of our fields and land are certified organic by MOSA (Midwest Organic Services Association). Our animals are fed the certified organic crops and are raised by organic standards, however, we have not pursued organic certification for the animals to prevent extra costs and paperwork. We rely on farmer-to-consumer trust relationships.

From our farm we offer: pastured chicken, pastured turkey, pastured brown eggs, and 100% grass-fed raw milk (available through a herdshare).

We are located approximately 25 minutes from Peoria and 30 minutes from Bloomington.

Chase Hill Farm. The Organic Farmstead Cheese from Chase Hill Farm is handcrafted in small batches from fresh top quality raw milk. We use exclusively the organic-certified milk from our own herd of grassfed cows.

Our Original Farmstead Cheese is mild like a Colby or Havarti cheese, but with a unique flavor that retains the "character" of our raw milk. Our cheese has a sweet, creamy flavor and a buttery yellow color that comes from our green grass. We also make a Farmstead Cheese with Garlic, some with Chives, Cheddar, and recently started making 1/2 lb. Organic Camembert rounds.

Chase Hill Farm is an organic-certified family farm in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts. Mark and Jeannette Fellows manage the farm as a grass-based seasonal dairy. Our mission is to produce quality local food from grassfed cows using sustainable low input practices. These practices include rotational grazing, seasonal calving, and using draft horsepower.

Our herd of 30 Jersey, Normandy and Holstein cows milk seasonally from March to December. We feed organic grain for about 8 weeks from calving until grass is ready here in northern Massachusetts, but the rest of the year cows are 100% grassfed.

Our Organic Farmstead Cheeses are available in local stores and farmstands in western Massachusetts, and in some of the Boston-area Bread & Circus stores. We also ship our cheeses. Wheels run around 8 lbs. each. Cost: $50/wheel plus $10/UPS shipping.

MINNESOTA

Cedar Summit Farm is Minnesota's only 100% grass-fed creamery, located in New Prague. For more than four decades, our certified-organic family farm has been dedicated to preserving the health, environment, and economy of our local community. The water in our backyard creek leaves cleaner than when it came in. That's because we raise grazing cows on healthy, hearty pastures, which contributes to cleaner water for our neighbors downstream. Even in winter months, our happy herd roams freely and chews on preserved grass grown on our 185 acres.

Compared to typical "organic" farms, which feed cows a mixture of grass and grain, our 100% grass-fed milk, cream, and yogurts have a healthier balance of Omega-6 to Omega-3, and higher levels of CLA, "good fats" shown to greatly reduce the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. For us, it's about healthier cows, a healthier community, and a healthier planet. It's the 100% difference!

You can find many of their dairy products at Twin Cities Natural Food Co-ops. They also provide home delivery service to New Prague and surrounding areas. Call for information.

NEW YORK

Freeman Homestead is a family-owned and operated farm in western NY, producing high quality, delicious and nutritious meats, eggs and milk since 1997. They practice seasonal farming where the production year matches the natural rhythm of the seasons. They use management-intensive grazing and wholistic practices to create a biological farming system that is beneficial for the animals, environment, consumers, and community.

On the fields, absolutely no pesticides, herbicides, or artificial fertilizers are used. Instead, their own organic compost made on the farm from the winter bedding and natural is applied to the land. During the grazing season, the animals are outside, giving them an abundance of fresh air, sunlight, and organically fertilized pastures. During the winter they are housed in buildings for protection and bedded with organic matter used for fertilizing the fields. No antibiotics, medications, or fast-growth hormones are used on the animals. The focus of the farm is on the overall well-being of the animals, the positive impact on the environment and community, and the nutritional quality and taste of the product offered to customers.

Products offered include: pastured chickens and turkeys; 100% forage/grass fed and finished beef and lamb; forage fed pork; and eggs from pastured hens. They also offer shares of the cow and goat herds for customers interested in 100% real milk. The cows receive no grain at any time in the lives, and the young goats and lactating does receive no more than 1 pound of goat grain per day.

Meats are available seasonally, sold ready for the table or freezer, and are picked up by the individual ordering. Eggs are available year around. Deliveries are periodically made to the Buffalo area.

Call or write for more information or a current newsletter and price list of available products.

Northland Sheep Dairy is a 100% grass-fed farm producing artisanal raw milk cheeses, lamb and mutton, as well as 100% wool products and tanned sheepskins. PENNSYLVANIA

Coulter Farms lies quietly nestled between Shade Mountain and Tuscarora Mountain in Juniata County, midwayusda logo between Harrisburg and State College. We are proud producers of exceptional grass fed beef, lamb, pork, free-range eggs, raw milk cheeses from our own Certified Organic 100% Grassfed Jersey cows (up to 9 varieties), and honey.

Our family manages the rotational grazing of 120 acres of rolling multi-speciated pasture and 90 acres of productive hay fields (organic as of Fall, 2007). We practice a purely organic farming system, relying exclusively on biological systems to achieve excellence in our soils/pastures/harvested forage/animals. Rotational grazing, cover crops, composting of manure, no-tillage seeding and conservative crop rotations are used extensively. Only the cleanest water runs off our land. We have eliminated all chemical, synthetic, antibiotic inputs and strive to reduce fossil fuel use while making the best possible use of solar fuel.

Ruminant animals at Coulter Farms never taste any form of grain...only mother's milk, lush pasture and fermented hay. Our two-year-old steers (8-month-old lambs) are fully finished, giving ample marbling to the meat. This marbling produces the highest levels of CLA and Omega 3's (not to mention taste and tenderness) in the meat. Wintering beef over a second winter to an age of 24-26 months is time-consuming, but we feel you'll agree that it is well worth the wait.

Processing is handled humanely in a local, USDA certified abattoir. Two to three weeks aging results in the highest levels of taste and tenderness. The product is skillfully cut, flash-frozen and cryo-vac packed to maximize quality and longevity.

A walk-in freezer at our farm allows us to maintain some inventory of meat, but most animals are pre-ordered (you may come select your animal on the hoof' if you like). Beef is available in quarters (approximately 100 pounds), halves or whole animals.

We would appreciate the opportunity to provide your family with what is, we are confident, the best meat available in the grass-fed market. Call or email us for more information. If you come to see us, please remember to bring your kids and boots so we can show you around.

WASHINGTON

Pride & Joy Dairy is located in the agriculturally rich Yakima Valley. Our signature item is our delicious and rich “cream on the top” WSDA certified organic and grass fed raw cow’s milk products. Because our cows are fed 100% grass eight months of the year, the resulting dairy products are packed with omega 3’s and cancer-preventing CLA’s (conjugated linoleic acid).

Our Grade A grass fed raw cow’s milk is available year-around and our cow’s are pampered with a no stress lifestyle. They feast on luscious fresh green grass and our pastures are farmed with management intensive grazing (MIG) practices. This intensive pasture rotation plan is used in lieu of chemical fertilizers or pesticides. During the winter months when fresh grass is not available, we purchase high mountain certified organic hay from Simon Farms in Fairfield, ID. Our free-ranging chickens forage, fertilize and cleanse the pastures behind our dairy herd. The resulting dairy, meat, and eggs are of impeccable quality both in flavor and health properties.

We have been farming with organic and chemical-free practices for over 15 years and have been certified organic with the WSDA for the past 5 years. None of our animals are fed antibiotics or hormones and our pastures are not treated with pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or any chemical substances.

We also offer 100% grass feed beef and lamb. Our beef is available in whole and halves and is dry-aged and custom cut according to your specifications—generally available late fall. As part of our MIG practices, we also have fresh eggs available on a limited basis.

We encourage visitors to come to the farm! We’d love to take you on a tour and show off our working Border Collie dogs.

Please visit our website, email, or call for more information. And check this listing frequently as our product line is growing!

Sea Breeze Farm is a diverse, multi-species, “beyond organic,” grass-based animal farm, located on the beautiful Isle of Vashon in Washington’s picturesque Puget Sound.

We do not apply commercial fertilizers of any kind to our pastures, relying instead on a grazing technique modeled after the migratory habits of wild cattle and bird populations. This labor-intensive, rotational system allows our freely-ranging poultry flocks to symbiotically forage, fertilize and cleanse the pastures behind our dairy herd. The resulting meat, dairy and eggs produced on our farm are of infinitely superior quality, both flavor- and health-wise than those produced conventionally, and in our opinion are significantly superior to typical “Organic” animal products. We also take pride in the sustainability and resource-wise management of our farm systems.

We sell our products only through local channels. Our meat, dairy, eggs, cheese, wines and prepared foods such as ice cream and meat broths are available from our on-site Farmstand, as well as the Vashon Saturday Farmer’s Market. Our pure, whole, unadulterated cow’s milk is also available at the Pike Place Market Creamery in Seattle. Please check this listing frequently as our products will soon be available through additional retailers in both Seattle and Vashon Island. For directions to the farm, please see our website.

LoveTree Farmstead Cheese produces of some of the world's finest and most unique sheep cheese and dry-aged "European" style grass-fed organic lamb.

LoveTree is organically farmed with 130 acres devoted to grazing lands and 70 acres to wildlife habitat. This not only makes for a healthy environment, ecologically speaking, but it also offers us some unique opportunities for flavor enhancement of our cave-aged cheeses and our lamb. Our goal is to bring you the flavor of the northwoods through our raw milk cave-aged sheep cheese and our succulent grass and milk-fed lambs.

We milk the sheep seasonally (April–September) while the grass is green. We only make the raw milk cheeses from the grass-fed milk. Our market lambs are weaned from their mothers at approximately 45 days and are then reared on whey from the cheeseroom, grass, and sometimes a minimal amount of corn if we have late pastures or an early winter (no more than 1/2 pound of corn a day per lamb when or if it is necessary to feed corn).

What We Grow: Raw milk cave-aged sheep cheeses and raw milk cave-aged jersey cow milk cheeses (when milk is available); European style lamb (live weight between 75–90 pounds) June–December; Hot House lambs (live weight 40–55 pounds) April–May; replacement stock for sheep dairies; and livestock guardian dogs.

Where We Sell Our Products: St. Paul (MN) Farmers Market, every Saturday April–December, 7 AM–1 PM. Winter Market sale days are every other weekend, January–March, 9 AM–12 PM, corner of 5th & Wall Streets, St. Paul. We also have on farm sales by appointment only at this time. Pastured pork is vacupacked and available by the cut, and in season, 1/2's and wholes. If you think you don’t like pork, you don’t like bad pork. Our pork is absolutely wonderful. Nitrate-free bacon in 2011.

Pastured, free range Eggs are available only in the grazing season by the dozen. You might find eggs as good, but none better.

All meats are State of Wisconsin inspected for pickup at our farm.

Ask us about our 100% grassfed dairy. Our calves stay with their own mothers for 8+ weeks. Humane/healthy/beautiful.

Our friendly Farm Store hours: Saturday morning 10am-1pm, Wednesday evening 4pm-7pm, or most anytime by appointment.

2011: Our family—Scott, Julie, Ian (13), Quinn (11), Lilly (8)—has been farming now for nine years. Our friends keep coming back for our quality products and excellent customer service. Our bond with you is to communicate freely and keep your interest at heart. You are always welcome at the farm to see why our products taste so great and why we’re proud of being responsible world citizens. Visit our website to see pictures, video and more.
