About Time Place, located in SW Virginia, gives you an alternative to supermarket pork.

Sunshine and fresh air give our pigs natural vitamin D and digging around in the earth provides iron. Our pigs have free access to forage, but we do supplement their diet with farm fresh milk from our cows and eggs from our free range chickens. No hormones or antibiotics or anything other than food you would eat yourself are given to our pigs. Any processed feed or grasses we provide during the winter months when pasture are unavailable is free from hormones and antibiotics.

Our pork is sold on the hoof at a price of $350 for a whole pig or $225 for half. A whole pig will typically net 120–140lbs of meat cut and wrapped to your specifications. Prices are for live pigs delivered to a local USDA processor. Processing charges are additional and paid directly to the processor. Product can be arranged for local pick up or we will ship anywhere within the US for exact costs.

Babes in the Wood is a small, family-run pig farm in central Virginia. We raise our pigs in the forest, which is their natural habitat. With 2-3 pigs per acre there is plenty of room for them to roam and forage for food. This method is sustainable and benefits the woodland.

Our pigs are never confined (our sows even give birth in the woods!) Subsequently our pigs are not only happy, but they also produce superior pork. Because it is 100% free range, the texture of our pork is outstanding. It also has a particularly wonderful flavor as their diet of nuts, berries, etc. is reflected in the taste.

We specialize in a rare British breed called the Tamworth, which is known for its particularly rich and distinctive flavor and is especially suitable for raising outdoors. Our pork is free of hormones and antibiotics. We sell a range of cuts, plus sausages and bacon. In addition, we offer whole live hogs for spit roasts or for custom processing.

Customers can order by phone (434) 983-9721 or online at enquiries@forestfed.com. We also run a buying club and have drop-off points in Northern Virginia and Southern Maryland. To join our buying club, email us and we will add you to our notification list.

We ship to anywhere in the United States and also attend the following Farmers Markets: Vienna Saturday Farmers Market (Saturdays, 8:00-12:00, May-Oct), Freshfarm Market, Silver Spring, Maryland (Saturdays, 9:00-1:00, May-Oct), Charlottesville City Market (Saturdays, 7:00-12:00, April-Oct), Charlottesville Christmas Market (Saturdays, 10:00-5:00, Nov-Dec), Alexandria City Farmers Market (Saturdays, 5:00-11:00, year round), and Clarendon Farmers Market (Wednesdays, 2:00-7:00, year round). Please contact us as this information is subject to change. You can also contact us for a list of grocery stores and restaurants that we supply.

We thoroughly enjoy showing people around the farm. Please let us know if you would like to visit.

Beatrix Farm began in June of 2007 and we're off to a great start. We are focusing on pastured chickens for this year but adding turkeys next summer so they will be available in the fall. We currently operate on Pascendi Farm in Middletown in a mutually beneficial relationship with their pastured pork and gardening operation.

We processed our first flock of Cornish Cross chickens in late July and quickly sold out. Because of the response, we raised another 400+ chickens and processed nearly all of them with help from friends and family. This is our last flock for 2007 and we still have some left, so make sure to stock up your freezers.

We invested in a feather-picking machine which has been an absolute blessing, speeding up our processing time dramatically. This winter we will be working on building an automatic scalder, and our processing equipment should all be on a trailer as soon as we can find a good deal on one. By next spring my wife and I may be available to help other pastured poultry folk in the area who need assistance processing birds on their farms.

Our birds are raised in clean, bright, open-air brooders for 3-4 weeks and then are sent out to pasture. For the second month, they are kept in movable pens where they have all the sunshine they want, protection from the elements, and are moved at least once a day. They are fed a non-medicated grower ration feed in addition to the grass as they cannot survive on pasture alone and it provides them needed vitamins and minerals to keep them healthy.

The same regimen will be used for turkeys next year, but for 4 months in all. We hope to start our first batch next summer and offer them for sale around Thanksgiving. There won't be many, so let us know early if you're interested.

Simply give us a shout if you'd like to come by and visit us. We'll be more than happy to show you around. You can pick up some chickens while you're at it and/or put in an order for next year's flock which should be processed around the end of May 2008.

Big Oak Angus Beef is pasture-raised and free of chemicals. The animals are processed at a younger age than conventional beef to insure their tenderness. The beef comes vacuum-sealed to preserve its freshness. A variety of cuts is available.

Big Oak Angus Beef, the Jerry Smith Family, Riner VA (540) 382-7284.

At the Big R Farm, our family has been raising our own meat and eggs for over a year now. It is most gratifying to know you are eating as healthy as you can and giving your children what they need to become strong healthy adults. Recently, we have had others ask us to consider raising the same for them. So we are.

We will have pasture-raised beef, poultry, and eggs. Our animals are given grain and hay only as a supplement when necessary and are raised humanely. Medications are only administered when necessary also at our Vet's recommendation and then we try to use homeopathic treatments.

Please contact us if you are close by and would like to have information about what we will produce and when it will be available. This is something we would to do to help out families wishing to live and eat healthier and are not looking to become a big business operation. Also, we can supply you with organically grown wheat and grains, pastas, made from organic grains, organic oat groats, wheat grinders, oat flakers, etc. Contact us at:

The Chapel Hill Farm, near Winchester, VA, turns back the history book to the way beef is supposed to taste. Chapel Hill Randall Linebacks live very much as they would have hundreds of years ago. Ranging free on the grasslands of historic Chapel Hill Farm and drinking only limestone springwater, the Randall Linebacks, America’s ancient and rarest cattle, provide the discriminating and health-conscious gourmet the finest beef in the world.

Several hundred years ago, American farmers created the Randall Lineback through mixing European breeds to form a distinct blend that would naturally withstand the special rigors of the New World and that would provide meat, dairy products, and oxen. These animals were the ideal breed for subsistence farming in America. Randall beef was on America’s table before feedlots, before antibiotics, and before growth hormones. Because of their heritage, Randall Linebacks have finely grained meat with little intermuscular fat. Add to this the fact that they are grassfed and the result is meat that has an intense clean taste and is much better for you than conventional breeds of beef.

You are saving the endangered Randall Lineback breed when you eat Chapel Hill Randall Lineback rose-veal and beef by thus encouraging producers to raise more of these rare cattle. In addition, you have the pleasure of tasting a natural beef which has not been commercially available for more than a hundred years. Beef sides cut to order, USDA inspected, available from the farm; separate cuts available at Salamander Market, Middleburg, VA.

Davis Creek Farm is a small family farm in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains halfway between Charlottesville and Lynchburg.  Since 2001, we have raised Red Poll cattle and laying hens, and we we will begin production of pastured broilers in the spring of 2007.

We hope to provide an alternative to factory farming, where food is produced without concern for human dignity, animal welfare, or the environment.  Rather, we continue the age-old symbiotic relationship in which humans respected and cared for the animals they were dependent on. We know our cows by name, not by number!

Our cattle are raised on pasture their whole lives. Their diet consists of grass, certified organic alfalfa, sea kelp, natural minerals, and hay in winter.  We use a small-scale, family-run processor dedicated to humane treatment of the animals.  They are also skilled butchers and dry-age the meat. Our beef is not only good for you but great tasting: local chef Rachel Willis described it as “absolutely the best-tasting grass-fed beef I've ever had.”

We are currently selling beef cuts (vacuum-sealed and USDA-inspected) and eggs at our farm shop.  We also sell halves and wholes several times a year.

Farm shop hours are 9 am – noon Saturdays, or call us and we’ll arrange a more convenient time for you.  Please see our website for more information.  We welcome visitors!

Glen Eco Farm is a small, diversified farm, committed to sustainable agricultural principles. We produce a variety of fresh vegetables in season and market them at a local farmers' market, directly to customers who come to the farm, and also through a small CSA which we launched in 1998.

We maintain a small flock of pastured laying hens from which we sell eggs during the farmers' market season and year-round at the farm. We offer optional egg shares to our CSA customers during the CSA season and collaborate with a nearby pastured broiler producer to sell some of his product to our CSA patrons. During the winter months our eggs can be bought at several retail outlets in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Once a year, usually in the fall, we have older spent hens that we offer for sale to customers who want to use them as stewing meat or as feed for pets. We prefer to sell them live at a fair price.

We have recently sold most of our beef herd and are no longer offering beef products either by the cut or by the side.

Gryffon's Aerie is run by Collins & Ramona Huff and their two young children in the Historic Green Springs District of central Virginia. We raise American Milking Devon, Beef Devon and Belted Galloway cattle and Tamworth pigs, and have one of the largest purebred American Milking Devon herds in the United States.

Our goal is to produce the finest grass-fed beef and natural pork, which is why we chose heritage breeds. We feel that heritage breeds are best suited to grass feeding because that was their original diet and their genetics have remained unaltered.

Our cattle are raised on lush pastures from birth to finish. They do not receive hormones, unnecessary antibiotics, or grain which may contain animal by-products. We do not use herbicides or pesticides on our pastures. During the winter months we rotate the cattle to pastures stockpiled with cool season grasses and legumes and offer them quality hay.

Our natural pork are all free-range. The Tamworth pigs are known as the "Irish grazers." Most of their diet is made up of grazing high quality grasses, clover, lespedeza and other legumes. We never put rings in their snouts. This is cruel and inhumane—a pig's nature is to root. In the winter they are given pastures to dig up and prepare the soil for spring planting. These pigs are friendly, intelligent, highly vocal and take particular delight in a good belly rub. They are the "personalities of the barnyard."

Our animals are never separated from their mothers; natural weaning is paramount. Although it may slow breeding production slightly, we feel that it makes for a healthier, happier livestock. The animals are not just our livelihood, they are our companions and our responsibility. It is our mission to raise and harvest them in a stress-free and respectful environment.

All meat is processed at USDA facilities that meet our strict humane slaughtering guidelines. Nothing is wasted. Bones are used to make stocks and demi-glace, the hides are tanned, and wool is spun into yarns. It is all part of our mission, and that of the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, to protect the genetic diversity and integrity of heritage livestock.

Purchase our products directly from the farm or in Richmond at Good Foods Grocery, in Roanoke at Roanoke Natural Food Co-op, in Blacksburg at Annie Kay's, and in Newport News at Granma T's and Health Trails. You can also purchase through our website—we ship nationwide.

Look for our products at some of the finest restaurants in the state. We are located just 2.5 miles north of Interstate 64 on Route 15, just 20 minutes east of Charlottesville and 40 minutes west of Richmond. Farm hours on Saturdays from 11:00 to 4:00, or call to arrange for a more convenient visit. We look forward to seeing you!

Hollin Farms is a three-generation family farm in Fauquier County, Virginia, about 45 minutes from the Washington DC/ Virginia beltway.

Our "Natural Angus Baby Beef" comes from yearling steers and bulls that are about 800 pounds as compared to industrial feedlot steers which weigh about 1200 pounds. Angus is the name of the breed—a black English breed renowned for its beef quality.

"Natural Beef" is from animals that have received no antibiotics in their feed and have no growth implants. These yearling beefs are slaughtered at 800–900 pounds, which is 300–400 pounds less than industrially raised cattle. Because they are younger, the beef is generally more tender and leaner.

Prices for 2008 are about $3.90 per pound for all cuts from steaks to hamburger (for a quarter order). Price includes slaughter and vacuum/freeze packing. Sold in quarter, side, or whole units only. Customer picks up at Gore Custom Meats in Stephens City, Virginia.

Majesty Farm is a small, family-owned farm dedicated to providing fresh healthfully raised foods from a perspective of sustainable local agriculture. We have a herd of mixed beef and dairy cattle, and a herd of mixed dairy and meat goats. We also sell pastured lamb and hope to have milk sheep in the future.

All beef cattle, sheep and meat goats are solely on pasture that is free of pesticides and herbicides. They are also given free-choice kelp and Redmond mineral salts at all times, and hay in the winter. We use no hormone implants, fly control medicines, or routine vaccines or antibiotics. Our milk cows and milk goats are given a grain ration in the milking shed that consists of corn, oats, barley, alfalfa pellets, flax seed, sunflower seeds, distiller grain, probiotics, and yeast. We use predominately organic ingredients, although we do not have organic sunflower or barley available to us. All our milkers are soy-free, assisting in well-digested dairy products. We strive for quality over quantity.

In addition to our naturally raised pastured beef, we raise chevon (young goat) and provide our CSA supporters fresh raw dairy products and soaps made from chemical-free fats. Duck and chicken eggs, herbs, vegetables, and pastured poultry are available seasonally. Family milk goats, as well as pet goats and brush goats are also available. Our pastured beef is sold by the quarter, half, or whole beef, and our pastured chevon and lamb by the half or whole for delivery in June and October. There are openings at other times, call for availability. The meat is processed and dry-aged locally by a USDA-inspected, family-owned slaughterhouse.

We welcome scheduled visits to the farm, but as we are a working farm must discourage drop-bys.

Mount Airy Farms provides 100% Certified Organic, 100% Free-Range Angus beef, humanely raised on over 800 acres of rolling grass-and-clover pasture in the foothills of the Blue Ridge. Our cows are never confined, instead roaming free on 3+ acres per animal. They are bred, born, and raised on our farm using no feed lots, no genetic modification, and no inbreeding.  Cows are usually finished with free-choice, organic grain; however, 100% grass-fed is available upon request.

We believe in stewardship of the land, and practice sound ecological farming techniques that go above and beyond the organic standards. Our water sources are protected from animal impact, and we manage our cattle herd to ensure our pastures remain fertile and lush. We grow our own 100% Certified Organic hay right on the farm and don’t ship our cattle anywhere until they are ready to be processed, which helps reduce our dependency on fossil fuel.

Beef is available by the whole, half, or quarter. Check our website for
beef-by-the-cut availability (coming soon), or call us for more information.

We offer 100% grass-fed Argentine-style beef, 100% Grass-fed New Zealand-style lamb, free-range pork from our Tamworth hogs, eggs from our pastured hens (who are moved every other day and are not fenced), and sheepskins. Rarely do our cattle or lambs eat hay; we graze year 'round!

Our ruminant livestock are not fed any feedstuffs that they are not designed to eat, such as grain, corn silage, or animal or fish by-products. Our growing animals are not exposed to anything that should not be injected into, implanted in, ingested by, sprayed-on, or poured-on them. Our fields are not treated with any synthetic fertilizers or chemicals.

We practice Holistic Management and low stress handling techniques. We accompany our animals to the processor to provide the lowest stress and most humane experience possible.

We farm in such a way as to minimally impact the environment and to actually increase the health of the land. We raise healthy animals from healthy pastures and soil.

Polyface, Inc. is grassfarming guru Joel Salatin's family farm. Nestled in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, the farm was launched in 1961 by Joel's health-conscious parents. The family has never used chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides, making this one of the oldest environmentally friendly farms in the United States. Polyface has been the working model for many of the farms in this directory and has been featured on ABC News and in the Smithsonian magazine.

Four hundred families and numerous restaurants rely on Polyface for salad bar beef, eggs from free-ranging hens, ready-to-lay pullets, and pastured chickens, turkeys, rabbits and pigs. Some customers drive 300 miles round trip to pick up their products.

It may be inconvenient for customers to have to drive to the farm, but there's a hidden benefit: they get to see exactly how their food was raised. Children may benefit the most. According to Joel, "Kids enjoy seeing and petting the animals, romping in the fields, and learning firsthand who, what, where, when, why, and how their food was made."

Running River Ranch raises Scottish Highland Cattle, South African Boer Goats, and Horned Dorset Sheep. We offer live steers for sale, as well as quarters, halves, and whole beef, cut to your specifications. Highland beef is extremely lean and flavorful. Healthy and delicious lamb and goat is also available, as well as raw goat's milk for pet food (not legal for human consumption).

At Running River Ranch, we are dedicated to raising healthy livestock, naturally. Our concern about additives—such as antibiotics, hormones, steroids, preservatives, etc.—in our food supply, and the rise in food-related allergies among friends, family, and the U.S. population in general, forms the basis for our "natural" philosophy.

We have selected hardy breeds of livestock and employ sound management practices, such as overseeding pastures with legumes and seasonal forages, pasture rotation to control parasites, and balanced nutrition, to keep our animals healthy. Our livestock are fed a grass and legume-based diet and we do not add hormones, growth enhancers or antibiotics to their feed.

We sell vacuum-packed, USDA inspected beef, goat and lamb.  We also take custom orders prepared in accordance with your specifications.    Shipping options include pickup at butcher shop or UPS dry ice pack to your door. Delivery of live steers is available within a 150-mile radius.

True Ewe Farm is a small, seasonal, grass-based sheep farm located in the foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, about an hour outside of Washington, DC. We produce natural, grassfed lamb and (coming in 2008) artisan farmstead sheep's milk cheeses.

We are dedicated to following sustainable and humane agricultural practices to produce high quality foods from Virginia's fine mountain meadow grasses.

Our lamb is tender, full of flavor and healthy for you. All our lambs are raised on the farm’s pasture salad – a local blend of native herbs, clover and grasses. They receive no antibiotics or growth-promoting hormones, and you never have to worry about animal byproducts in their diet.

We employ intensive rotational grazing, which allows us to fulfill the sheep's natural desire to graze on the freshest feed possible and to naturally fertilize the land.

We lamb once a year, so the supply is limited. Currently, we sell only whole lambs and half lambs. Intimidated by buying that much lamb? Don't be. Check out the “FAQ” section on our web site.

We invite you to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Eat Local! Eat True!

Tucker Family Farms. Our "farm to family beef" is produced using the grass found here on our farm at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Our farm is a recipient of the Chesapeake Bay Soil and Water Conservation Award and our family was named the National Beef Producer of the Year in 2000 by the Beef Improvement Federation. We are also certified by the Beef Quality Assurance Program.

The beef that you buy is backed by over 25 years of experience and a commitment to the care of our animals and the land. Careful breeding for traits such as muscle and marbling allow us to offer not only a product that is farm raised, but is superior in quality.

Fifty years ago family farms were prevalent in Virginia and most people either lived on or were one generation removed from a family farm. People knew who grew their vegetables, gathered their eggs, and raised their beef. There was a relationship between the family sitting down to eat a meal and the family who grew the meal. We at Tucker Family Farms want that back—not only for our family, but for the people who believe that how your food is produced matters. We hope that you will share that vision.

We also offer internships for those interested in learning more about a career in farming. We offer "A Day on the Farm" programs for an interactive experience on a cattle farm.

Please call us for more information.

Winn Family Farms—"Sheep + Seed + Sunshine = Grassfed Lamb"

Farming in America since 1626, Winn Family Farms is entering its twelfth generation of operation. Two of our three farms are recognized as Virginia Century Farms.

Dedicated grassfarmers, the Winn Family produces a flock of hair sheep solely on pastures and hay produced without pesticides. Our animals receive no antibiotics or growth-promoting hormones, and we do not feed any animal by-products, grain or other supplements, except for a mineral blend specially formulated for sheep.

Utilizing USDA-inspected harvest and packaging, and NCDA-licensed refrigerated transport capacity, the Winn Family can bring the safest possible locally-produced lamb directly to you or your neighborhood butcher. We can meet demand for lamb cuts, whole lamb, and live lambs throughout the entire year.

A reasonably good selection of cuts is kept on-farm for consumers' immediate needs, and live lambs may be bought any day by appointment. We request a ten-day advance order for whole carcass or locker lambs cut to your special order. This allows for dry-aging, butchering, and freezing in vacuum-sealed packaging. We can accommodate special religious needs at harvest.

All of the animals are fenced out of riparian areas to preserve soil and water quality. They receive free choice mineral and fresh wellwater in unlimited quantity. The flock is protected by perimeter fencing and Maremma livestock guardian dogs.

As we approach the beginning of our fifth century in American agriculture, the Winn Family seeks to bond with consumers who want to know the men and women who grow their food. As with all that we do, we sell our lamb with a full satisfaction guarantee.

When you choose how to spend your food dollars, we hope that you will select Winn Family Farms as one of your favorites.

Wolf Creek Farm, located between Charlottesville and Culpeper Virginia, provides grass-fed, natural beef. Our mission is to create a sustainable farm that produces health and enjoyment for our livestock, our community, our customers, and ourselves. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, we want to reconnect people to a more natural, wholesome, and healthy existence. Therefore, our beef is the way most people come to know us. Cattle are the centerpiece at Wolf Creek Farm, but we do offer several other grass farming based services and welcome friends and neighbors to come visit us.
